Minimize Slipping On Your Marble Floors

Posted on

Marble floors are the ultimate in luxury. Whether you have marble floors installed in your bathroom, kitchen or formal dining area, this floor style undoubtedly offers a flair of style and sophistication. Unfortunately, these aren't the only qualities that come along with marble flooring. The highly polished finished of marble flooring can also make it very slippery.

However, this doesn't have to prevent you from enjoying your floor. There are a number of things you can do to help minimize this issue:

Slip-resistant Solution

One option you have is to treat your marble floors with a slip-resistant solution. In order to understand how these products work, you first need to understand why marble is so slippery. Unlike other surfaces, such as carpet, marble doesn't provide any traction between your shoe (or foot) and the floor. This lack of traction causes you to slip. This is especially true if the floor is wet or you are wearing socks.

Slip-resistant solutions are chemical products that are designed to increase the amount of friction between the floor and your shoe. The more friction, the less likely you are to slip. You can apply the solution using a mop and one coating is typically enough for the life of the floor. When shopping for this type of solution, make certain it has been specifically designed for marble. A solution that isn't designed for marble may strip your floor or change its appearance.

Absorbent Mats

If you don't want to go through the process of treating your floors, an absorbent mat is an option. The risk of slipping on a marble floor is increased when the floor is wet. If your marble floors are installed in your kitchen, bathroom or entryway, it's important that you have an absorbent mat in place. Most people have mats around their home, but not absorbent mats.  If the mat doesn't actually absorb the moisture it just ends up on the bottom of the mat.

The naturally-slippery surface and the moisture will cause the mat to slide around, further increasing your risk of a fall. An absorbent mat is one that is designed to soak up moisture, like a sponge. A good absorbent mat should also have an anti-skid backing to help keep it in place.

You can enjoy the beauty and luxury of your marble floors, without the fear of slipping. Make certain you are taking measures to keep everyone in your home safe. To learn more, contact a company like Tomalak Tile & Stone, Inc. with any questions you have.
